Hotel Review: W Amsterdam

NL W Amsterdam Rooftop Flowers

W Amsterdam

Situated in the heart of Amsterdam, the W Amsterdam is one of the city’s trendiest hotels. It features modern rooms with hip restaurants and an incredible rooftop pool and lounge. The hotel also houses two popular restaurants, one of which boasts a Michelin Star. Booking a room at the W is a safe bet for a great stay when visiting Amsterdam.

Location

The W Amsterdam is nearby one of the city’s most central locations, Dam Square. Upon arrival to the hotel, you’ll be directed to the Exchange building where check-in is located at the top floor.

The Hotel

The W Amsterdam has 238 funky rooms and suites across two large buildings, an indoor spa, multiple restaurants, and a dazzling rooftop pool.

The hotel’s lobby is located on the top floor of the Exchange building, which offers incredible views of the city during check-in.

Food and Drink

There are four establishments where you can drink and dine at the W Amsterdam, MR PORTER, THE BUTCHER, THE DUCHESS, and W Lounge.

MR PORTER

This à la carte steakhouse is located on the top floor of the Exchange building. MR PORTER has a lively atmosphere, attentive staff, and some of the best steaks in the city.

THE DUCHESS

The hotel’s other large restaurant, THE DUCHESS, is located in the Bank building and boasts a Michelin Star. Don’t let its Michelin starred status scare you away, the restaurant’s shared concept makes menu items extremely affordable.

Without a doubt, THE DUCHESS is one of my favorite restaurants in Amsterdam. I’ve celebrated two birthdays at this establishment.

Rooftop Lounge

Located on the top floor of the Exchange building, the W’s rooftop lounge is one of the best spots in Amsterdam to take in views of the city. The lounge cocktails are original, the atmosphere is fun, and the vistas are unbeatable.

The Accommodations

The W Amsterdam offers multiple different room categories across two buildings, the Exchange and the Bank.

NL W Amsterdam Room 321 from Corner

Room Booked: Wonderful Exchange, City View

Our room (number 321) was located in the Exchange building and had incredible views onto nearby Dam Square.

The room we booked at the W is larger than typical hotel rooms in Amsterdam, which was a relief. At the base of the bed is a small seating area with an accent table. Beside the bed, two nightstands are arranged with each having universal power plugs for charging. There is an electronic safe in the room, a refrigerator, coffee maker, and mini bar.

Bathroom

The room’s ensuite open-plan bathroom is a modern design featuring frosted glass. The shower and vanity areas are large, with Bliss spa products for use. However, the open-plan and frosted glass do not cater to privacy, which may be an issue for some guests.

Our room’s closet area was quite small, which provided difficulties with clothing organization and getting ready.

The Spa

The hotel’s Away Spa is located in the Bank building and offers a variety of treatments. Treatment rooms at the Away Spa are dimly lit and relaxing. Due to limited availability, advanced booking is recommended.

Nearby Activities

Amsterdam’s central square, Dam Square, is minutes away. Situated on Dam Square is the Royal Palace of the Netherlands, which is a must-see while visiting Amsterdam.

Also close to the hotel are many museums, restaurants, and bars. If you need to reach other areas of the city, multiple tram stops are nearby.

Overall

The W Amsterdam is centrally located, rooms are vibrant and fun, the drinking and dining establishments are divine, and unique city experiences are on offer for guests.

What We Loved

  • It doesn’t get more perfectly located than the W.
  • The W’s restaurants are some of my favorites in Amsterdam. If you’re interested in dining at either Mr. Porter or Duchess, make sure to book a reservation in advance!
  • A rooftop pool with views of the city? Sign us up.

What You Should Know

  • In general, the room accommodations could use a “refresh”.
  • Rooms on the top floors of the Exchange building can be loud due to noise pollution from the rooftop lounge.
    • Our room (#321), was located on the third floor of the Exchange and we didn’t experience any issues with noise during our stay.
  • Less-expensive rooms may have a view of the inner courtyard.
  • The bathrooms in rooms are open-plan, which will not suit everyone.
  • There is an extremely limited number of sunbeds at the rooftop pool.
