Hotel Review: Kimpton De Witt, Amsterdam

NL Kimpton DeWitt Bed Wall Art

One of Amsterdam’s most adorable hotels is hidden right in plain sight. Located nearby to Amsterdam Centraal Station, the Kimpton De Witt has a bit of everything: detailed rooms, fun design, a great (free) happy hour for guests, incredible dining establishments on-property, and a helpful staff. This hotel is the hotel that I always have my parents stay at during their visits.

Location

Situated approximately five-minutes from Amsterdam’s Centraal Station, the Kimpton De Witt offers visitors a great location and perfectly appointed accommodations. Other main attractions located nearby are Dam Square, the Royal Palace, and the Old Church.

The Hotel

The Kimpton De Witt has 274 rooms and suites, an on-site restaurant and two bars. Your experience at this hotel begins in a gorgeous glass-lined lobby, where you’ll get your first introduction to the wonderful staff and interesting design of the Kimpton De Witt. I love the connection to nature you’ll find everywhere.

A special perk of staying at the Kimpton is that every afternoon, the hotel hosts a lively “Wine Hour”, where guests are treated to complimentary snacks and local beverages. To get around the city with ease, guests are allowed to use the hotel’s bikes for free, but make sure to reserve them in advance.

The hotel chain’s famous “Forgot it? We’ve got it” service always goes above and beyond here in Amsterdam and this particular hotel’s staff is among the most knowledgeable in the city.

Food and Drink

There are two establishments for drinking and dining at the Kimpton De Witt, Celia and Super Lyan. The prices for food and drink at this hotel are comparable to prices at other similar hotel establishments in Amsterdam, such as the W or the Anantara Krasnapolsky.

Celia

The hotel’s breakfast buffet and al la carte offerings are located in the hotel’s main restaurant, which features bright and sunny décor. We were positively pleased with the breakfast offering, however, the price tag for breakfast is quite high if not booked with your room in advance.

Aside from breakfast, lunch and dinner is also served at Celia and the staff is always extremely kind, with nothing ever left unstocked.

Super Lyan Bar

If we could, we’d visit Super Lyan Bar on a daily basis. This vibrant establishment offers incredible cocktails, delicious small bar bites, neighborly service, and has the best mixologists and atmosphere possible. Get there early or make a reservation to ensure your seat is secured.

The Accommodations

The Kimpton De Witt offers many different types of room categories and suites. There are cozy rooms for crashing and sprawling suites for relaxing. Some of the hotel’s suites have their own private terrace, which is an absolute treat in the city center.

Rooms We’ve Booked:

  • King Standard
  • King Essential
  • King Deluxe
  • King Executive
  • King Junior Suite

It’s clear there was careful attention to detail when designing the rooms at the Kimpton De Witt. In each space, you’ll see great use of angles and Dutch influence everywhere. Each room is equipped with an espresso machine, iron, and even have a yoga mat.

Beds are comfortable and are fitted with some of the most luxurious linens available. My mother says her stays at this hotel are always the most relaxing because she gets incredible sleep.

Bathroom Areas

At the Kimpton De Witt, the en-suite bathrooms were not designed to be minimal. Design is bold, but inviting. Bathrooms have rainfall shower-heads with exceptional water pressure. Most room categories do not feature a bathtub, so make sure to pay attention to the details when booking your room if this is important to you.

One downfall about the bathrooms at the Kimpton is that even in suites, the bathroom areas are a bit small and leave a lot to be desired for closet space.

Activities

There are countless historic sites and activities within walking distance from the hotel. Within five minutes are frequently operating canal tours, the Sexmuseum, the Royal Palace and Dam Square.

After visiting on-site Super Lyan, head over to Tales and Spirits to continue your cocktail consumption. For additional dining options, some of my favorite nearby restaurants are Cecconi’s and MR PORTER.

Overall

The Kimpton De Witt is a unique hotel in the heart of Amsterdam. The hotel’s décor is inspired, rooms are calming, and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable.

What We Loved

  • Due to the incredible location of the hotel, most activities and sites in Amsterdam are extremely easy to get to.
  • Accommodations are well-appointed, with beautiful design.
  • The hotel’s staff is helpful, going above and beyond for guests.
  • The hotel’s exciting and original on-site bar, Super Lyan, is a must-visit.

What You Should Know

  • The hotel does provide free bicycles for guests; however, quantity is limited and it’s often difficult to book this service.
  • We’d love more space to store luggage and hang clothing items.
  • Some rooms are not accessible due to the layout of the building, which may also provide difficulties for some travelers.
    • If it’s necessary to access a room without meandering through halls and up and down stairs, I’d recommend to advise the hotel in advance.
  • There is no spa at this hotel.
