Hotel Review: Borgo Pignano

Borgo Pignano Pool Sunset 2021

Tuscany is incredible and it sure has its fair share of gorgeous countryside villas and castles, but Borgo Pignano is one of the most noteworthy. Their focus on sustainability, design, and local heritage make your stay here unforgettable.

Location

Located in the heart of Tuscany, Borgo Pignano is approximately one and a half hours away from the city center of Florence. The entrance to the estate is breathtaking on its own with gates leading to a long, scenic drive up to the Borgo.

After arriving at the property, we were warmly welcomed by the staff and escorted to the reception area, where we were assisted to check in.

The Hotel

Borgo Pignano is a privately owned, self-sufficient establishment located on 750 hectares of land and it is surrounded by the rolling hills of Volterra in the Tuscany region. Its motto, “The Tuscan Haven”, perfectly defines the vibe of this incredible property – it is truly a haven for relaxation and recharging.

There isn’t a bad room at Borgo Pignano. The hotel also offers private villas with their own pool, located within the property borders. At the main hotel, there’s a gorgeous infinity pool that is nestled into an old stone quarry and is an absolute show-stopper. There’s an additional guest pool on-site that features a fountain and offers a different atmosphere than the main infinity pool.

Food and Drink

There are two restaurants at Borgo Pignano, Al Fresco and Villa Pignano. My husband and I were blown away by the great quality of the food at both – it’s hard to find dining establishments with such fresh, sustainable offerings that are artfully cooked.

Belvedere Bar

This outdoor drinking establishment offers incredible cocktails, delicious small bites of food, a relaxing atmosphere, and an incredible view of the sunset.

Al Fresco

The hotel’s outdoor restaurant, Al Fresco, is open daily for lunch, and dinner, with options changing seasonally. We were positively surprised by the fresh menu offerings, with traditional and modern dishes available to choose from.

Villa Pignano Restaurant

Beautiful food and wine are served to you directly from their onsite organic farm, which was masterfully prepared and presented. The outdoor tables are perfectly situated to overlook the rolling Tuscan hills and to watch the sun disappear behind them. Make sure to make a reservation!

Room Booked: Villa Room with View

We stayed in a wonderful room located in the main building of the borgo with a gorgeous ensuite bathroom. The room consisted of a large bedroom and a side room with a table and chairs, which we did not expect but appreciated the “bonus” area. It was surprisingly spacious and gave us gorgeous views of the property and surrounding area.

Bathroom

A beautiful door leads to an amazing marble bathroom, which left a great impression. It had a large shower, two sinks, and a luxurious bathtub. Indulging in a bath with the homemade bath salts and soap was a very recharging experience.

Activities

Here, there’s all to do or nothing to do. Some visitors, like myself, are simply engulfed in the beauty of the estate and don’t go far. Wandering around the borgo grounds, enjoying the pool, and indulging at the restaurants make a perfect day. Meanwhile, other visitors book cooking classes or guided tours, take horseback rides, or go running or cycling.

Overall

Borgo Pignano offers all aspects that make a countryside escape in Tuscany so special: Perfect landscaping, architecture and design, incredible food and wine, and beautiful rooms and villas. No matter if you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with family – you’re going to have the most relaxing time.

What We Loved

  • Nearly everything that is offered or that you find available in your room is grown in the organic garden and made onsite. From the soap you use to the wine you drink is locally sourced at Borgo Pignano.
  • The rooms and villas are well equipped, spacious, and possess all the small details that you’d expect from such a charming estate.
  • The food is exceptionally flavored and well-prepared.
  • The hotel’s staff are friendly and quick. We enjoyed the service and appreciated the thoughtful “extras” we received.

What You Should Know

  • There were more children at the hotel than anticipated, which may be a drawback for some.
  • Our room was spacious and offered privacy, but it was possible to hear people in the hall conversing.
  • At the hotel’s main pool, sunbeds are very limited.
  • Despite the wonderful lunches and dinners, the breakfast at Borgo Pignano was underwhelming.
