What It’s Like to Travel to Aruba During the Pandemic

Travel during the COVID-19 pandemic may not be for everyone, but after months without traveling, I decided to commit to taking every single precaution I could take prior to leaving – and while staying in Aruba. Here's what I learned along the way:

When I discovered an insane travel deal to Aruba over the holidays, I booked it without hesitation, more than ready for travel after months of quarantine and a few road trips. The Caribbean? Yes, please!

Prior to the trip, I made sure to intensely research the pre-travel testing requirements. Flights were convenient, and to my surprise, flight time from Amsterdam to Aruba is approximately 10 hours (I thought it was more).

COVID-19 Precautions Are Everywhere
While it’s easy to forget the rest of the world when you’re relaxing in Aruba, I was still aware of the pandemic because masks were required (the hotel staff wore them at all times), sanitizer dispensers were prevalent, and distancing markers served as constant reminders. Restaurant tables were more widely spaced, and several only seemed to offer outdoor seating. Minibars in the rooms were emptied and services were limited, but they can be supplied upon request.

There’s Not as Much to Do, But That’s Okay
Cruise ships aren’t coming to port, many shops and restaurants are closed, and restrictions limit/prohibit certain activities. But, that’s okay – there is still a lot to do in Aruba. I loved the multiple visits we made to Flamingo Beach.

The white sand beach features an overwater hammock and several large cushioned cabanas are available to rent where guests can relax or even enjoy a meal. Visitors can snorkel among the cabanas or reef wall to see the fascinating sea creatures.

Getting to Aruba
I flew KLM from Amsterdam to Oranjestaad. Despite the limited service, it was an excellent flight, with dinner and a snack pack served on the long haul. It’s important to note that there were no seats specifically blocked off for social distancing and the flight was pretty full.

Pre-Travel Requirements
Every passenger is required to take a COVID-19 test within three days of departure. An online form must be completed along with proof of negative test results.

Additional island conditions are listed on signs and note requirements to masks and social distancing. Wearing a mask is mandatory in all enclosed places and on public transport, and in some various outdoor public spaces.

Where to Stay If You Go
I stayed at the Renaissance, adults only section of the hotel – and I can’t recommend it. The room wasn’t really clean and the pool area doesn’t make up for the lack of beach access.
