Hanoi Gate

Much calmer and less chaotic than HCMC, Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, has well-preserved ancient architecture, beautiful temples and tree-lined lakes, and a rich culture with influences from France, Southeast Asia and China. The most memorable local Vietnamese dishes I ate during my travels to Vietnam were in Hanoi.

Where To Stay
The Old Quarter of Hanoi is the most popular area with backpackers, is affordable and within walking distance of many sites, bars, restaurants and the lake. Public transportation is easily accessed in the Old Quarter.

What To Do

  • Old Quarter
The heart (and most chaotic) part of Hanoi, where narrow streets are lined with shops, street food, and hawkers. It is a great place to walk around and people-watch, look at ancient architecture (the old City Gate), and try some Vietnamese snacks.
  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
This is where Ho Chi Minh, leader of the Communist party in Vietnam, is placed to rest. It is a large memorial located in Ba Dinh Square. There is no entrance fee, but the opening hours are only from 08-11 daily, from December – September.
  • Take a Day Trip to Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay, or “descending dragon bay” in Vietnamese, is located a few hours outside of Hanoi. This UNESCO World Heritage site is filled with many surprises, such as beautiful caves and breathtaking landscapes. There are many different options available for visiting Ha Long Bay, from a single day trip to a weeklong excursion.
