Koh Phi Phi Boat

A set of two islands and a popular destination for backpackers, Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Le are located in the Southwestern area of Thailand, in between Krabi and Phuket. When you think of these islands you think of a remote and tropical setting – this is the uninhabited Koh Phi Phi Le. A constant smell of sewage and marijuana, a mass of bars and tattoo parlors and loud music defines the populated Koh Phi Phi Don. Keep in mind that setting foot on Koh Phi Phi requires a small fee when arriving for “cleaning of the island.” Entrance tickets can be purchased online or cash can be paid upon arrival.

Where To Stay
Unfortunately, it is not possible to stay on Koh Phi Phi Le, but there are plenty of accommodation options available on Koh Phi Phi Don. If you are looking for a quieter area, stay far east of the populated area. Camping is also available on the island.

Things To Do

  • Snorkeling
Snorkeling trips are sold all over the island, with a variety of different options and excursions to choose from. You can rent a snorkel, and tours begin at around 300 THB, but prices vary between tour companies.
  • Maya Bay
Made famous by the movie “The Beach,” Maya Bay is located on Koh Phi Phi Le, so you will need a boat to reach it. It is absolutely gorgeous and worth the trip. The sand is the finest sand I have ever touched. There is a landing fee for entrance to the island, and the proceeds help to keep it clean.

  • Nightlife
You will see people walking around and drinking out of small buckets everywhere – it is safe to say that Koh Phi Phi Don is definitely a party island! To save some money, yet still enjoy the nightlife, buy beers at the local markets.
  • Phi Phi Viewpoint
The hike to the viewpoint, which is 600 feet high, takes approximately thirty minutes. The viewpoint offers panoramic views of the islands, and is best during sunset. I recommend bringing bottled water and not attempting the hike during the hottest time of the day.
  • Monkey Beach
A perfectly pristine white sand beach that is worth the trip. It is populated with macaque monkeys. Beware! The monkeys have an incredible sense of smell and can even smell pre-packaged foods. If you do not want to be approached by curious and somewhat aggressive monkeys, do not bring food of any kind to this area!
