Penang

Batu Ferringhi

Penang is the food capital of Malaysia, and it’s no wonder with Europe, India and China influencing Malaysian food. There are first-class modern restaurants and many food stands in Chinatown and Little India. With local noodles, the garlic naan and spicy curries, it’s all about the food in Penang.
Besides food, Penang is also well known for its picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town and its tranquil beaches, such at Batu Ferringhi Beach.

Where To Stay
If you are searching for culture, history, and a vibrant nightlife, then George Town is the location in Penang for you. Located on the opposite side of the island, Batu Ferringhi is the place to stay for the beach and a little relaxation.

Things To Do

  • Stay a Night (or more) in George Town
In 2008, UNESCO named this beautiful place a World Heritage Site, and when you walk around the town, you see its charm and you know exactly why it was named one. George Town has been increasingly popular with tourists since being listed as a World Heritage Site. George Town has busy streets, Raj-era architecture, street art, displays of paper lanterns, cute shops and cafes, and incredible hawker food.

Penang Street Art

  • Kek Lok Si Temple
“Temple of Supreme Bliss” is the largest Buddhist temple in all of Malaysia. Its design consists of different levels, and to reach the highest level you have to take a cable car, which affords visitors a beautiful view.
  • Little India
A spectacle of interesting people during the evening, Little India has some of the best food in all of Malaysia. Influenced with rich Indian recipes, the dishes in Little India have a distinct Malaysian twist to them. Little India is also a great place to shop and buy small gifts for friends and family. I purchased 100 large sticks of incense here for 3 MYR.
  • Chinatown
Beautiful Chinese paper lanterns line the tops of streets in this area of Penang. Many shops and restaurants abound, all of which have Chinese influence mixed with local Malaysian traditions and flavors.
  • Batu Ferringhi
A beautiful beach with clear, warm waters and hardly any tourists! Batu Ferringhi is an awesome place to relax and rejuvenate after all the traveling. I splurged and stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel. I wasn’t disappointed, as the service was incredible, the location was amazing and the pool bar served cold beers.
  • Penang Botanical Gardens
30 Hectacres of gardens with a cascading waterfall located near Penang Hill. Macaque monkeys and other animals roam freely around here, and the monkeys can be a bit grabby, so beware if you have food in your possession. The gardens are a bit rundown and could use some investment, but nonetheless, it is interesting to watch the wildlife. Open until 20:00.
  • Rent a Scooter
A wonderful and inexpensive way to get around the island and explore it all at your own leisure.
  • Get a Haircut
Penang is home to many excellent barbers. A man’s haircut costs 7 MYR.
