Modern Athens is built around the historic 5-century-BC citadel situated on a rocky hilltop, the Acropolis. The city has been the center of Greece’s civilization for over 4,000 years. The Greek goddess Athena is the patron of the ancient city of Athens, and you will see owls (symbolic of her animal form) all around the city.

 

Where To Stay
While in Athens, it is a smart idea to stay nearer to the Acropolis. Many historic sites, shopping and dining options are within walking distance of the city’s main tourist attraction. Although the area is very touristy, there are frequently great deals on lodging.

 

What To Do

  • Acropolis Complex
    A large ancient citadel, the Acropolis is home to the ruins of several buildings of great historical significance including the famous Parthenon. The Parthenon was opened in 432 BC and is an iconic temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Modern Athens was built around this high, rocky area located in the center of the city. Entrance to the Acropolis is 12 EUR, and includes various other attractions around the city.

  • Temple of Zeus
    Located not far from the Acropolis and right next to the Arch of Hadrian, this beautiful ruins is also included as part of the Acropolis ticket. The site is much less crowded and more peaceful than the busy Acropolis.

    Learn to make the famous Greek cuisine by taking a cooking class. There are tons of options available to choose from.
  • Shopping
    Athens is a fashion-addict’s dream. Many unique shops line the street of Adrianou and nearby Monastiraki Square. Ermou Street features many name-brand designers.
