HR Split Markets

Split is a quaint town located on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia. It is famous for its beaches, massive Roman palace built by Diocletian, and its participation in Yacht Week. Split also has some of Europe’s most unique boutiques, markets and galleries.

Where To Stay
I recommend staying within Diocletian’s Palace, or nearby, to remain within walking distance of bars, restaurants and the major attractions in Split. During my stay in Split, I saved by booking a private accommodation (hotels tend to be overpriced, especially during Yacht Week). My accommodation was located on a pedestrian street (Radunica), which was quiet, yet nearby to all of the action.

What To Do

  • Diocletian’s Palace
After the Roman emperor Diocletian voluntarily gave up his throne, he had this massive palace built at the turn of the 4th century and retired here on the Adriatic coast. The Peristyle is an open court area where the two main roads of the palace meet, and today it is the most photographed part of the palace.

Diocletian's Palace

  • St. Domnius Cathedral and Bell Tower
Originally built as the mausoleum for Diocletian, it was consecrated as a Catholic church in the 7th century. It is the oldest Catholic cathedral that remains in use in the original structure.
  • Narodni Trg
Serving as the town center during the 14th century, today, this public square is lined with boutique shops, bakeries, restaurants and cafes.
  • Hit the Markets
The talked-about Trg Brace Radic (Fruit Square) is lined with vendors selling locally grown fresh produce that is inexpensive, delicious and a purchasing from one of these vendors directly supports the local economy. Also dispersed around Split’s city center are vendors selling textiles and souvenirs. Some of the best bargains in Europe can be found among these street stalls.
  • Hit the Beach
Although I was unimpressed with the overly crowded beaches in Split, visiting the beach is a favorite activity of tourists.
