My Favorite Travel Apps

Technology advancements have made traveling a whole new game. My chaotic first trips abroad (over ten years ago) left me stranded, lost, lonely, unable to communicate and I had less information about my destination readily available. Today, we’re able to search destinations, flights, find free guides, learn languages, and more at the touch of our fingertips. It’s really changed the way we explore.
While traveling, I’ve tried numerous apps. Some apps I’ve liked and some I’ve deleted almost as quickly as I downloaded it. Since my friends and family are constantly asking which applications I’m using, I figured I’d share them.
See below for my favorite apps for traveling Europe and for solo travel!

Skyscanner
When I needed a flight in Southeast Asia, I turned to Skyscanner. This application finds the cheapest flights to your destinations – even finding the cheapest budget airlines! Skyscanner also allows spontaneous adventurers. to search “everywhere.” It finds the cheapest flights worldwide from your current location. When I was on an island and wanted to leave, Skyscanner determined my next destination more than a few times. Using Skyscanner, I got a flight from Bali, Indonesia to Kuala Lumpur for 30 USD. It was with a fantastic airline that had in-flight entertainment and a warm meal.

CityMaps2Go
This app has saved me a few times! Although I enjoy exploring a place on my own, sometimes having a map is needed. CityMaps2Go is a brilliant offline map aka it works without any data or wifi. Simply download the map of the city you’re traveling to and you’re good to go! You can even save and categorize attractions, restaurants and more within the app.

Venmo
I hate owing people money. Venmo is an application that allows you to input purchases (in any currency) and share the information with friends. It divides the bills evenly, sets reminders and makes payments. It makes traveling with friends much less stressful.

Currency
Getting used to the different values and conversions of foreign currencies can be confusing. There are tons of currency conversion applications on the market, but I prefer the Currency app by Jeffrey Grossman. This fantastic app allows users to add numerous (no limit) currencies to track and to keep on budget while traveling.

Instagram
Bon Voyage! Have fun viewing my vacation photos! This is the ultimate app to document your fabulous trip abroad. It is also a great way to search photos from other Instagrammers to determine the best angle for that perfect destination photograph. Follow me @travelwithcandi.

WhatsApp
WhatsApp is a great way to keep in touch with your friends that you have met while traveling – without all the crazy international texting or calling fees! This app makes it easy to communicate with international friends. WhatsApp connects to your personal cell phone number, allowing you to make calls and text with anyone around the world, all free of charge.

Wi-Fi Finder
While traveling, being disconnected from social media isn’t a bad thing. However, in this modern age we have become accustomed to checking in, downloading and constant viewing. Wi-Fi Finder locates any paid or free hot-spot near you.

dict.cc
It’s important to learn a little bit of a country’s language. This fantastic translator app allows users to download a foreign language to their mobile device. Although this application is missing some languages, the most frequently spoken languages are available to download into your dict.cc library. The best part about this application is it is able to work offline –so even when you’re not connected you can still figure out what is happening! More than just your basic “thank you,” dict.cc can help you with bargaining, directions and more. Even though I speak six languages, I found this app invaluable.

Mobile Passport
I’m not a big fan of waiting in line at customs anywhere, but I particularly hate waiting in line when I’m arriving back to the United States. With Mobile Passport, you can breeze through the lines at many major airports in the United States. Setting up your profile is recommended for frequent travelers to ensure continued ease of use.

TripAdvisor
Although some reviews can be quite jaded (I’m constantly asked by friends to review businesses I haven’t been to – requests I decline), for the most part TripAdvisor has some great recommendations and insights for tourist attractions, restaurants and accommodations. I love being able to leave feedback, especially if a place is exceptional or disastrous. If you’re at a loss of what to do or where to go, TripAdvisor may be able to help give you some ideas.

Skype
I am obsessed with Skype. I use Skype for so much more than just video calls. I have set up a personal phone number so I can always receive calls while traveling. I use Skype to call places back home (for example, my bank) for a fraction of the price that I would pay using my SIM card. The only setback is that Skype needs Wi-Fi or data to work.

My Favorite European Travel Apps

Planning a trip to Europe is exciting! This continent is rich history with beauty, making it is hard to decide where to begin your journey. While living and traveling around in Europe, I tried and tested many things to make my adventure better. I barely refer to guidebooks for many reasons. Mostly, they’re expensive and a pain to lug around. My most cherished trips were based on recommendations from fellow travelers or locals. Every day apps are improved and developed – technology is crazy! Currently, these are my favorite applications for European travel.

GoEuro
GoEuro is the only application I use when looking for the cheapest transportation in Europe. GoEuro monitors the prices of air, rail, bus and car share from city to city within Europe. Although some parts of Europe, for example the Baltics, aren’t as connected to this app as others, it is the best way to view all of your transportation options.

GoEuro

Air Help
Has your flight been delayed or canceled? Have you been denied boarding? Air Help may be able to help you with that! Although it’s currently only available in the European Union, Air Help assists you with making a claim – even when you are on the go. Simply input your information and this app takes care of the rest, and it could even make you up to 600 EUR back for your troubles. Don’t let the airlines win all the time.

Spotted By Locals
Do you desire to experience Paris or Prague like a local? Spotted By Locals is a unique offline city guide featuring updated tips and advice from real locals. Offline is key, especially when relying on Wi-Fi only!

Visit Europe
The official application of the European Travel Commission, Visit Europe is a free app featuring tons of incredible photos, maps, information and more.

My Favorite Apps For Solo Travel

Traveling the globe solo can be a lot of things: exhilarating, freeing, educating, expanding, sexy, exhausting and scary. Some of my most cherished travels were when I traveled alone. Traveling alone allows me to more deeply appreciate everything I experience. Being solo engages senses in a different way – you’re no longer in any comfort zone. While traveling around solo, I’ve found that these applications made my trip safe, enjoyable, and more relaxed.

Backpackr
Traveling the world solo can be lonely. Backpackr helps travelers connect with nearby fellow travelers. This is a great way to meet like-minded people during your journey. In my personal opinion, the coolest part of this application is receiving an authentic-looking virtual stamp every time a new county is entered.

Backpackr

All Subway
With over 125 international subway systems listed, this comprehensive application allows you to easily navigate public transportation. AllSubway’s maps work offline, so if you’re lost underground, you can still find your way.
