16 Emerging Destinations to Visit in 2016 (Before They're Discovered!)
With more people than ever choosing experiences over material things – 2016 is the year to get out there and explore. There are more options and destinations available to choose from than ever before – where will you decide to go?
During my extensive travels in 2015, my explorations brought me to both touristy destinations and to unexplored and remote destinations. To truly discover a country and its culture, emerge yourself in it – away from the jaded touristy locations.
You’re probably thinking: “Oh jeez – yet another travel blogger recommending places to go.” I understand because there are so many of us out there now. It seems repetitive to see the same topics about the same places! But the destinations that I chose to make my emerging destinations list are beautiful, unique, and (not yet) riddled with tourists.
The places on my list, as like every destination I’ve been to, have been chosen by me. I spent my own money traveling to and through these exciting locations. I’m not sponsored, and haven’t been, and I’m proud to say that. Check out these emerging destinations if you are craving an adventure that’s not so common and a bit off the beaten path.
Stop dreaming. Grab your backpack, and go!
- Koh Lanta, Thailand
Why?
Nearly void of tourists, Koh Lanta, located in the Krabi Province, is an exotic island that smells of marijuana and spicy Thai food. The beaches are pristine, the lodging is sparse, the air is relaxed, and getting around is easy with a rented motorbike.
- Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Why?
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Mostar basin is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. That’s a bold statement – and I mean it. This place is unreal! You feel as if you have entered a fantasy world when you enter Mostar. Turquoise waters, waterfalls, ancient castles, divine cuisine, and rich history – Mostar has it all!
- Riga, Latvia
Why?
Riga is an underrated former Soviet charmer located in the Baltic area of Europe. Latvian locals like flavorful beer, tons of garlic, and late nights with lively music. Plus, they sure know how to keep this medieval city clean and beautiful – it’s one of the cleanest in Europe.
- Inle Lake, Myanmar
Why?
Myanmar recently opened its doors to tourism and ever since it has sparked the interest in curious travelers. While the entire country is magical, Inle Lake is especially stellar. The area’s deep ancient traditions are rooted around a long (22km), shallow lake. Inle Lake was the highlight of my travels through Myanmar.
- Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia
Why?
Influences from China, India, and Thailand are mixed together with local Malaysian flare to create one hell of a food mecca. Some of the best food I’ve ever had was food I devoured while traveling around Penang. Be prepared for large servings, cheap prices, happy locals, and gorgeous beaches.
- Cairo, Egypt
Why?
There’s never been a better time to visit Egypt. This country’s revolution scared off tourists six years ago, and they have yet to return to Cairo. Instead, many tourists visit Egypt’s beach resorts. Cairo offers visitors a worldly stay, sure to be filled with museums, architecture, Giza’s pyramids, markets, “Egyptian whiskey” (delicious tea) and kabobs.
- Da Nang, Vietnam
Why?
Vietnam has been increasing in popularity over the past years, but Da Nang remains relatively free of tourists – most travelers head to nearby Hoi An and Hue. Da Nang’s gorgeous beaches, eclectic city center, and vibrant nightlife make it a must when traveling around Vietnam.
- Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Why?
Siem Reap’s massive temple complex and backpacker atmosphere attract all the attention in Cambodia, but it was Phnom Penh that stole my heart. Slightly spooky and exciting at night, this city is filled with incredible food, great bargains for shoppers, happy pizzas, and some of the best people watching in the world. Don’t skip PP – make sure to stay by the riverside for the best vibes and new friends.
- Vilnius, Lithuania
Why?
Cheap, exotic, and off-the-beaten-path, Vilnius is a hidden oasis in Europe. Lithuania as a whole is often overlooked, but its capital city is rich with culture, historical sites, museums, and interesting cuisine. It’s a great choice for travelers who are visiting Europe on a budget.
- Plzen, Czech Republic
Why?
Have you ever had a Pilsner Urquell? If you haven’t, you’re missing out. Undeniably Czech Republic’s most famous beer, Pilsner is brewed in Plzen and its brewery tour is bad-ass. It’s not the lame walk yourself through some super touristy bullshit – it’s a personally guided tour with small groups throughout the entire brewery, even the cellars. Oh yea, and Plzen was Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2015.
- Moscow, Russia
Why?
Vodka, comfort food, adventurous locals, colorful palaces, massive domes, world-class shopping and dining, and breathtaking landscapes are what Moscow is all about. Even the metro stations are an elaborate display of beauty. It does get really, really cold in Moscow, so for travelers who don’t favor the chill, it’s best to visit in the summertime.
- Belgrade, Serbia
Why?
Not only does Belgrade have some super cool architectural sights, it has the most unique and crazy nightlife in all of Europe. Nightclubs on floating barges, underground bars, and discos stay open all hours of the night. The party starts early and ends late. Put that drinking hat on, živeli!
- Doha, Qatar
Why?
Dubai is packed with crazy tourists, Abu Dhabi can be repetitive, but Doha is the fresh and up-and-coming city in the Gulf Coast. It’s flush with interesting markets (with fantastic bargains), tons of dining options, a beautiful beach, and a nearby ancient fishing village, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Doha even has an impressive skyline.
- Medellín, Colombia
Why?
Formally Pablo’s town, Medellín is like the sun emerging from some dark clouds. This city is lively, unique, and filled with hidden things to do – just look around. It’s also a great place to make a new friend, as the Paisas are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. I definitely left this city with a few new friends.
- San Diego, California, USA
Why?
San Diego has always been a desired destination to visit in the United States, but 2016 may be the best year to visit, yet. Its world famous San Diego Zoo celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, and tons of new local dining options and microbreweries have popped up all over the city.
- Porto, Portugal
Why?
Portugal is one of the best bargains within the euro-zone, but Porto is often skipped over by travelers who flock to the country’s capital, Lisbon. Porto is located to the north of the capital, and it’s a wonderful surprise. Minimal tourists around Porto allows maximum exposure to this city’s delights. Don’t forget to try the Franceshina sandwhich – your trip isn’t complete without its deliciousness.
